US health officials propose using a cheap antibiotic as a ‘morning-after pill’ against STDs

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 11:01:59 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials plan to endorse a common antibiotic as a morning-after pill that gay and bisexual men can use to try to avoid some increasingly common sexually transmitted diseases. The proposed CDC guideline was released Monday, and officials will move to finalize it after a 45-day public comment period. With STD rates rising to record levels, “more tools are desperately needed,” said Dr. Jonathan Mermin of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The proposal comes after studies found some people who took the antibiotic doxycycline within three days of unprotected sex were far less likely to get chlamydia, syphilis or gonorrhea compared with people who did not take the pills after sex.The guideline is specific to the group that has been most studied — gay and bisexual men and transgender women who had a STD in the previous 12 months and were at high risk to get infected again. There’s less evidence that the approach works for other people, including...

According to the advisory, the continuing rain, on top of rising king tides, are causing flooding on streets in low lying neighborhoods. Live video footage of a Fort Lauderdale neighborhood showed rivers on the roads as a car made waves driving on the pavement. The Monday morning rain comes as Sunday brought soggy weather to the area where neighborhoods are still recovering from the weather. Over in Las Olas, a construction crew was seen in the process of building a sea wall to prevent high tides from entering the area. The weather was not limited to Broward County. Over in Miami, streets were saturated as rain continued to drench the area. Drier days are ahead as a front is expected to slowly sag the rain southward. Cooler air is expected from this front as well.Broward County officials have asked residents to report any issues or impassable roads to the county’s custom...

There’s a lot to like about this group. And I understand the fandom and the buzz and everything — everybody wants change after every single year. You don’t know if those changes will lead to anything on those other teams. But we like our group.”The Heat have been...

Restaurant review: Gallery Resto-Boutique

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 11:01:59 GMT

Rue du Grand Cerf 7What’s good? The Gallery Resto-Boutique’s menu contains a large selection of dishes spanning Asia, so diners can choose where exactly they’d like their palate to travel. Examples include Hanoi-style beef soup, Thai curries or a traditional Beijing duck roast. What’s not? Honestly, we were hoping the flavors would pack more of a punch — the chicken in the small asparagus soup as a starter was a tad bland, and the Thai red curry contained raisins, which is probably a sign the restaurant is catering to a foreign crowd.Vibe: The restaurant’s black and white décor serves as a backdrop to its gallery concept. We were told that artists can use the space as to exhibit their work. We ate on comfy white chairs, peering up at images of cheetahs and elephants on the walls and a golden Buddha head behind the bar.Who’s picking up the check? The prices are reasonable for the swanky quartier Louise, but a little high for Brussels, ranging from €11 t...

LONDON — A Tory leadership hopeful held clandestine talks with media mogul Rupert Murdoch within days of joining the U.K. Cabinet, then failed to declare it in transparency data.Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch, the bookmakers’ favorite to become the next Conservative Party leader, met privately with Murdoch and other News Corp executives in New York in September 2022.Murdoch, who stepped down this month as chairman of Fox and News Corp but retains a hugely powerful role at the media empire, questioned Badenoch for 20 minutes in an atmosphere described as akin to a job interview by one of those in attendance. An official briefed on the meeting said a nervous Badenoch — who had not expected Murdoch himself to be in attendance — asked her aides afterward: “How did I do?”The encounter was never recorded in Badenoch’s public log of ministerial meetings. The U.K. government’s ministerial code of conduct clearly states that “meetings with newspaper and other...
