BANGKOK (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom had a surprise meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing on Wednesday after being warmly welcomed by other senior leaders in a display of friendliness that stands in sharp contrast to the dialogue between the United States and China in recent years. The governor is on a weeklong tour of China, where he plans to push for climate cooperation. Newsom’s trip as governor, once considered routine, is drawing attention as it comes after years of heightening tensions between the U.S. and China.“I’m here in expectation, as you suggest, of turning the page, of renewing our friendship and reengaging (on) foundational and fundamental issues that will determine our collective faith in the future,” Newsom said in brief opening remarks ahead of his meeting with Wang Yi, China’s top diplomat, earlier in the day.Though Newsom was in China to promote cooperation in curbing climate change, Chinese officials took the opportunity in welcome ...Stock market today: Wall Street gets back to falling and slumps toward 8th drop in the last 10 days

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street is slumping Wednesday following a mixed set of profit reports from two of its most influential Big Tech companies. The S&P 500 was 1% lower in morning trading, coming off its first gain in the last six days. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 127 points, or 0.4%, as of 10:05 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 1.4% lower.Microsoft rose 3.8% after reporting stronger profit and revenue for the summer than analysts expected. Its movements carry extra weight on the market because it’s the second-largest company by market value. But Alphabet was tugging the market lower even though the parent company of Google and YouTube also reported stronger profit than expected. Its stock fell 8.5% on worries about a slowdown in growth for its cloud-computing business.Alphabet is another one of Wall Street’s biggest companies and, like Microsoft, a member of the “Magnificent Seven” group of Big Tech stocks that’s accounted for a disproportionate amount...Sports on TV for Thursday, October 26

(WSVN) – A seemingly ordinary date turned into a horrifying ordeal for one Florida man as he narrowly escaped death at the hands of his date and her alleged accomplice.According to authorities from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, the victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, encountered a nightmarish sequence of events that unfolded in Pensacola during a date with a woman he met online. Authorities said the victim and Natalie Fonseca had initially connected through social media and agreed to meet for dinner and hangout. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is at it again. Fresh from being pictured shaking hands with Vladimir Putin, Orbán on Wednesday donned a hat he said had been sent to him by Donald Trump.“Look what came in the mail today! Thank you for your support, @realDonaldTrump!” Orbán wrote on X next to a photo of himself wearing a bright red cap with “TRUMP” written in capital letters. Handwritten on the front of the cap is “Viktor you are great” and what appears to be Trump’s signature. On the side are the numbers 45 and 47 — Trump was the 45th U.S. president and wants to be its 47th.The gift may be an apology from the former U.S. president, as earlier this week Trump mixed up the leaders of Hungary and Turkey. “There’s a man, Viktor Orbán, did anyone ever hear of him?” Trump said at a rally in New Hampshire. “He’s probably, like, one of the strongest leaders anywhere in the world. He’s the leader of Turkey.” Turkey’s president is Recep Tay...European Council summit live: EU leaders meet amid Israel-Hamas, Ukraine wars

BRUSSELS — It’s unprecedented: This summit of European Union leaders is taking place as peace is shattered around Europe and in the Middle East.Russia’s war in Ukraine grinds on after more than a year and a half. Tensions are again rising between Serbia and Kosovo in the Balkans after decades of uneasy quiet. Warnings of ethnic cleansing emerged from Nagorno-Karabakh, the Armenian enclave Azerbaijan recently annexed in a military offensive. And then there’s Israel war Hamas in Gaza, where violent war erupted amid the longer conflict earlier in October when Hamas launched an attack on Israel, and Israel retaliated with thousands of airstrikes on the Palestinian territory. As Israel prepares a ground invasion of Gaza, EU leaders have been struggling to find a common line on the Israel-Hamas war. And they’re concerned this conflict is overshadowing all others. With recent elections in numerous European countries reshaping the political landscape, this summit ...Police ID man arrested in connection with crucifix vandalism at Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston

Boston police say a suspect was taken into custody after an exterior crucifix was vandalized at the historic Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston overnight. The arms of Jesus on the crucifix were broken and left dangling after police say Michael Patzelt, 37, of Attleboro, allegedly climbed up and attempted to swing and hang from the cross.“The suspect broke both the statues arms prior to officers responding and placed him under arrest,” the Boston Police Department stated in a news release, noting that Patzelt had also knocked off a female victim’s headwear before approaching the crucifix. The 37-year-old was later charged with Assault & Malicious destruction of property. A spokesman for the Archdiocese of Boston later stated – “Unfortunately, the Cathedral experienced vandalism at the exterior crucifix … It’s now in the capable hands of the BPD. The Archdiocese will work with the Cathedral to assess the damage.”The Cathedral of the...Editorial: Tyson Bagent offers pleasure and inspiration for Chicago Bears fans

It may not quite be Bagentmania yet, but Tyson Bagent’s sparkling turn in his first NFL start on Sunday represented welcome fun for a Bears fan base unused to the concept. The undrafted rookie out of Division II Shepherd University of West Virginia — hardly a heralded cradle of star quarterbacks — not only capably led the Bears offense, he flourished in what ended up being a lively victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. The networks lapped it up. And, judging from some intermittent check-ins on local sports talk radio, more than a few Bears fans are now getting carried away with visions of the next Tom Brady. That’s OK. That’s fun too.Sports so often provides broader life lessons useful to those of us not gifted with sprinter speed or rocket arms. So it was with Bagent, who after the game spoke of how hard he’d worked to get to this level and how he’d prepared himself to succeed when he got there.Boiled down, it all came out to lots of hard work, ...Latest news
